I've been kind of hesitant to use this record because Gojira has been getting a lot of exposure for it and that makes me uncomfortable. I heard a couple of songs as soon as it came out and I was just wanted to lay waste to everything. "From Mars To Sirius" does live up to a good chunk of the hype surrounding it. But people are comparing them to Mastadon, who are stylistically different, Metallica, oh Gruumsh, please no, and Meshuggah...? I think they sound a little more like Strapping Young Lad, but that's just me.
This record is fairly different from their others. In the past they've been putting out super tech-death metal."From Mars to Sirius" however is an emotionally heavy metal record. It's not just harmonies and melody. Gojira is no Killswitch Engage. They 're not all about the chorus, they are French and they're frigging heavy (sort of a juxtaposition, eh). Exorbitantly heavy. Now, if I'm losing you don't think they are a Cryptopsy ripoff that tried singing. That's not what they are. They've written twelve songs that fit in just over an hour. That's an average song time of just under six minutes, although there are three 8 minute songs if that says anything. They take technically executed time signature changes with epic passages of emotion and sludgy, chunky riffs to make a metal journey. I'm only going to recommend "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe" for fighting. But if you're driving to an event or a long distance for practice try this. You'll just melt into it and you're drive will be seamless.
