A couple of years ago one of my friends played me an EP from a band called Beneath the Massacre and I was blown away. They were so fast and heavy. Everything was technical and tight and well thought out. I listened to that EP for a good six or seven months and set it aside so I wouldn't get bored. Then they got signed to a fairly small American metal label. When I heard that I freaked out and couldn't wait until full-length came out. Right before I turned 21 they put it out and since then I've been trying to wrap my mind around it.
I keep hearing comparisons to Cryptopsy and Origin. I can see where people get these comparisons (Cryptopsy is French-Canadian), but they're not as accurate as you would like. Beneath the Massacre do play what could be called death metal. They use lots and lots of double-bass, blast beats and over the top vocals. But they use it all intelligently, and creatively. Maybe to an untrained ear it could blend together in an overwhelming wall of groove, breakdowns and inane yelling. But to someone that's into it you'll find each song stands out from the ones before and after it. And as unbelievable as it may sound the lyrics are very intelligent. They're not about killing people or Satanism or anything like that. They are about social issues. Social injustice. Global inequality. Things that actually matter. This take on lyrical content combined with the music is an aural battering that I can't stop. I take it over and over again. The amalgam of everything I've talked about just makes me want to rip out throats and start a Militia revolution. I don't expect to hear very many records coming out this year as good as this one.
